About Us

Grant & Shaw Ltd is owned and run by Alan Grant, who took an M.A. in Bibliography and Textual Criticism at the University of Leeds, followed by three years as cataloguer at R. & J. Balding Ltd. and six years as senior antiquarian bookseller with Blackwell Rare Books.

Grant & Shaw Ltd was founded in 1989 with financial assistance and general encouragement from Peter Shaw, whose interest in the business ended in 1994.

We remain proud of our award-winning first catalogue of ‘Books and Manuscripts from the Library of Sir Gore Ouseley, Orientalist and Diplomat’, which is still in demand for its bio-bibliographical content; since then we have issued a further seventy-eight catalogues of rare and interesting books.

Due to the high cost of catalogue production and mailing, 2009 has seen the introduction of a series of "Broadsides", short lists of 20 to 30 items illustrated in colour; please contact us by email if you would like to be added to our mailing list.

We are members of the ABA and ILAB and exhibit annually at the Edinburgh and Chelsea Book Fairs.
